I spoke to someone the other day who works for the Orlando Weekly about a group he was trying to get started. It would have no official members or structure. It would simply be a group of people getting together to tackle whatever social issues were presented. I was skeptical about the value of this until I read about your experience with barcamp. I understand your frustration. Sometimes I do feel like I'm about to get a headache from all the people talking to me when I realize its just IMs and @replies.
But I do think its worth the trade off. Sure that one guy had a nice relaxing life, but what if he owned or was otherwise invested in his business? Maybe those weeks waiting for a reply were wrought with stress about the decisions. Of what if he'd had a client like you're father's and was unable to close the deal without a mobile/car phone?
Have we lost something? Probably. But at least we got something in return.

a) Miller High Life was def my favorite super bowl ad because I knew it was coming. The idea of promoting your promotions was just too good. And the whole idea of trying to work around the cost of super bowl spots fits so well into their current campaign. If I drank beer, I'd order a High Life!
b) I am so entertained by the story of that Australian pizza place. Such a simple, slightly mean idea. Probably would work with a number of small market businesses.
